American Murderer (8/10)

Written and directed by Matthew Gentile, and “Based on” a true story about Jason Derek Brown, this is a spot-on presentation of a charming con man sociopath, disturbingly played by Tom Pelphrey. Although Ryan Phillippe gives a wooden performance as an FBI agent, the film is bolstered by a terrific short appearance by Jacki Weaver as Jason’s mother. More disturbingly, every time Jason opened his mouth with his slimy smile he reminded me of our pathological president, Joe Lyin’ Biden.

Instead of trying to scam the entire world, however, Brown finds himself in financial trouble and scams a gullible woman, played convincingly by Idina Menzel, who sleeps with him and helps him.

He finally tries to convince a skeptical Moises Arias, in a good performance, to help him make an armored car robbery, which ultimately lands him on the FBI’s most wanted list.
