The Spirit of Denny Hastert

 by Tony Medley

Remember Denny Hastert? He was the RINO who Bush made Speaker of the House (1999-2007) and who put the finishing touches on the destruction of the Reagan Revolution begun by George Herbert Walker Bush. Hastert was the guy who spearheaded the idiotic compromises with Democrats that installed tax cuts for only ten years, among many other craven capitulations. He was the guy who allowed government spending to run rampant during the first six years of the Bush Administration when Republicans ran Congress and The White House.

Well, I just saw Eric Cantor (R-Va.) interviewed on Fox News and Denny Hastert's spirit is alive and well in the upper reaches of the new Republican House majority. He refused to answer questions, like all the politicians before the Tea Party revolutionized the Republican Party and allowed it to win back the House, which is antipathetic to the spirit of the Tea Party and citizen politicians who aren't afraid to take positions.

Worse, he refuses to back Michelle Bachman for a leadership role in the new Republican majority. Michelle Bachman is more responsible for the new majority than Cantor and all his old style political friends put together. I was getting emails from Michelle daily for more than a month, and I’m not a Republican. I never heard from Cantor or the new Speaker or anyone else except Dick Morris, and he's not a politician. No, Michelle was out there fighting. Now the Republican Old Boys' Network, led by Cantor and his buddies, is denying her a leadership role she has earned.

We can only hope that the Republicans, who claim that Barrack Obama didn’t hear the message sent by the voters, will show that they did hear it and vote Bachman into the leadership role for which she is running. If you have a Republican as your representative in Congress, let that person know that your continued vote for him/her will be greatly influenced by whether or not he/she votes for Michelle. It will be a sad indication that Washington really hasn’t changed if Bachman is rejected and that this Republican majority is just the same old Denny Hastert under different names.
