The Great Hack (1/10)
by Tony Medley
Runtime 113 minutes.
TV-MA.
You probably didn’t know it if
you voted for Donald Trump, but, according to this film, everyone who so
voted did so because they were swayed by a devious manipulation of “fake
news” masterminded by an outfit called Cambridge Analytica. At least
that’s what this Machiavellian piece of propaganda would have you
believe.
Directed by
Karim Amer & Jehane Noujaim it
is filmed sort of cinema-verite, but it is really ham-handed. There are
shots of Brittany Kaiser, who is pictured as a beleaguered
whistle-blower from Cambridge Analytica that would have you believe that
they are shot by an eavesdropping camera in real time as she’s flying or
watching testimony on TV.
But let’s get real here. There
is an entire crew filming her and recording her picture and audio at the
same time. The ones on the plane are truly bogus. She’s flying somewhere
and talking to herself, but there’s a camera right there next to her
looking at her sitting in a window seat and there has to be a microphone
somewhere to pick up what she’s saying, and she’s not saying it to the
camera. We are to believe that she’s just talking to herself. It’s the
same as the shots in what appears to be her home as she’s watching TV
and talking to herself. Yeah, she’s talking to herself and an entire
crew that is standing just outside of camera range. The bottom line is
that they are all staged; they probably did retakes if something was
wrong with the original.
The question is, can Brittany
Kaiser be trusted? Well, she is a democrat who worked for Obama and
Howard Dean, and voted for Bernie Sanders, so you be the judge.
Also prominently featured, in
fact she is almost the narrator, is Carole Cadwalladr, a left wing
journalist best known for a series of articles for The Observer
about what she called "right-wing fake news ecosystem.” Amer and Noujaim
really just let her take over the film and set its tone.
Equally spurious and
intentionally misleading are the profuse minutes devoted to showing the
Trump team targeting voters with selected news designed to win their
votes, presented as if this is some nefarious, underhanded way to
conduct a campaign. In fact, all campaigns have targeted voters in this
way throughout history. There’s nothing nefarious about it.
Produced by Geralyn Dreyfous,
who is a big democrat contributor, more than $40,000 to Obama and other
democrats, if The Great Hack is anything it’s inherently biased
and dishonest.
